Abstract

The Greek writers, especially Aristotle and Theophrastus, had a significant influence on Demetrius in his work On Style, as Demetrius himself acknowledged. Aristotle discussed style in his work On Rhetoric, highlighting the key qualities that a sound style should possess, clearness, grandeur, and propriety. However, the classification of style as presented by Demetrius does not appear in Aristotle’s work in the same form. Aristotle classified style into two types: continuous style and periodic style. Theophrastus, on the other hand, categorized style into three types: grand, simple, and intermediate. Demetrius adopted this classification and added a fourth type, the forcible style.
