This paper revolves around the echoes of Oedipus’ life in Naguib Mahfouz’s "The Absurdity of Destinies", where it looks obvious similarity between Oedipus and Dedef, the protagonist of Mahfouz's novel. For both of them appeared a prophecy that made him, as an infant, a source of danger for the king, and both of them left his homeland against his will, as Laius was ordered to get rid of his son Oedipus, and the priest of Raa ordered to get rid of his son Dedef from the city to protect him, and both of them were carried by the servant to save him, so the shepherd gave Oedipus to another shepherd in another city, and the maid Zaya took Dedef to raise him in another country, and both grew up deprived of his mother and father; Oedipus was deprived of his mother's bosom, as well as of his father's protection. Likewise, Dedef was deprived of his mother's bosom, Zaya, as well as of his father, the priest of Ra, and Both of them were raised in the care of a rich man, as Oedipus was raised in the care of King Polybus, and Dedef was raised in the care of Bisharu, the architect of the pyramid, and both of them received care and attention until each of them grew up, and both of them were pushed by the chance that fate uses for their fate. Oedipus learns his truth through a prophecy and decides to flee to his inevitable fate, so he kills his father and marries his mother, as well as Dedef, who was prompted by chance to meet his real mother, so he takes pity on her and takes her to his home, so she meets his fake mother and the truth is revealed, so the echoes of Oedipus’ life appear clearly in Mahfouz’s novel. Mahfouz extract the life of Oedipus with clear professionalism and precise accuracy in fateful events that illustrate the extent of fate’s rulings over human.
